Microsoft Word and Google Docs are two of the most popular word processors. However, coming from Big Tech companies, they are not word processors that are interested in protecting users privacy. If you want one that does, consider the following alternatives:
1.) Cryptee
Cryptee is a document editor and photo and video storage software based in Estonia. While not a word processor per se, Cryptee can still be used to type documents and notes. It also creates PDFs and password protected PDFs. It is open source and supports end-to-end encryption. Cryptee can be used anonymously, as all you need is a username. It is free, but they have paid options as well if you need more storage.
2.) CryptPad
CryptPad is an online productivity tool based in France. Unlike Cryptee, it is more similar to Microsoft Office and Google Suite, so it offers more than the word processor. It is also open source, and it supports end-to-end encryption. You don’t need an account to use it, but to use all the features it offers, you will need to create one. CryptPad is free to use, but to upgrade storage, you will need to pay.
3.) LibreOffice
Created by The Document Foundation, an organization based in Germany, LibreOffice is quite similar to CryptPad as they offer more than just a word processor. It is open source, but it does not support end-to-end encryption. That being said, it seems they collect and retain less information than Word or Docs. It is free to use, but you can make a donation if you would like to support the software.
If you know any other alternatives to Microsoft Word or Google Docs, let me know in the comments.
Until Next Time,
