Check Your Settings If You Still Have a Twitter Account
To stop unwanted calls and protect your privacy
If you still have a Twitter (X) account, then you need to check your settings. Recently, Twitter released audio and video calling and, for some reason, thought to enable it by default. For me, there was no warning, and I only found out when I simply searched "Twitter." I was surprised and immediately turned them off, as I don’t need anyone trying to call me. For me, this is just another example of the social media site having become a complete mess since Musk’s acquisition.
If you don’t want anyone randomly calling you, you can simply turn them off. To turn them off, you will need the mobile app, as you cannot do it through the website. Click Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Direct Messages → Enable audio and video calling. You can alter the settings to your liking if you do want the feature enabled.
You’ll also want to check to make sure that if you do want calling, you check the option where your IP address isn’t going to be leaked. Your IP address allows anyone to see what your location is, which is why it is a privacy concern. Fixing the settings can protect it, but if you use a VPN, then that won’t be much of an issue anyway since it conceals your true location.
Because this feature was relatively thrust upon us with no warning, I would suggest you keep an eye on your account and its settings. This advice applies to all your accounts, not just Twitter.
Until Next Time,
