Anybody who is subscribed to my newsletter and those who are familiar with the privacy debate know the answers to why privacy matters. I even wrote about it several months ago. However, given the alarming escalation of privacy threats from individuals, companies, governments, etc., it’s important to revisit this question of why privacy matters. Today's newsletters contain snippets of answers from others on why it's important and how it should be a growing concern for those who haven't already recognized its importance.
1.) Privacy Matters by Privacy International
*Privacy International has written up a great series of all the reasons why privacy matters that I highly encourage you to read through. Instead of listing all the reasons that they listed, I am going to list one that I think encompasses all the reasons.
“In addition to all of the above, privacy is a right that as such also enables our enjoyment of other rights, and interference with our privacy often provides the gateway to the violation of the rest of our rights.”
2.) Privacy in Authoritarian Times by Daniel Solove
“As the United States and much of the world turn back to the darkness of authoritarianism that blighted the previous century, we must remember that privacy is one of the bulwarks against the power of authoritarian governments. Unfortunately, we’re living in a more intensive surveillance society than ever before, and our privacy laws are ill equipped to protect us against government access to our personal data.”
3.) "I Have Nothing To Hide" by NBTV Media
“History has shown how governments use surveillance to target dissenters, minorities, and anyone challenging the status quo. Privacy isn’t just for criminals—it’s a safeguard against abuse of power.”
4.) Why Privacy Matters by Secrets of Privacy
“Privacy is not merely a legal or technological concept. It's about preserving our autonomy, dignity, and personal space. The ability to control our data and keep certain aspects of our lives hidden is important for maintaining our individuality and personal freedom.”
5.) Why Privacy Matters by Monique Barrow
“Without privacy, we cannot properly function as a society or as individuals.” - Dr. Woodrow Hartzog from Data Privacy Fundamentals course
6.) 4 Social Media Posts that Explain What Privacy is by Monique Barrow
“I need privacy, not because my actions are questionable, but your judgement and intentions are” - unknown
7.) From The Privacy Cloud author herself (me)
“Honestly, the abbreviation for the European non-profit noyb says it best, it’s none of your business.” - Monique Barrow
These fragments should make it clear to you why privacy matters. Now that you know what’s at stake, take the initiative to take back your privacy, such as using privacy-friendly software and raising awareness of privacy.
If you have anything you would like to add, let me know in the comments.
Until Next Time,
